Project description

ewz is an electricity producer and a distribution company, mainly in the city of Zurich. In 2009, the company decided to install UMG devices in selected transformer stations at the low-voltage level in order to monitor load profiles, power availability, and power quality.

The NQS software collects the values from these UMG devices, analyzes them, and informs the users via a web application, wall displays, and e-mail. The functions offered include:

  • Visualization of online and archive measurements as tables, load curves...
  • Power quality monitoring, i.e. diagrams of PQ values, visualization of Vdips and swells, calculation of the quality margin, weekly reports (EN 50160)...
  • Monitoring of systems and installations: Load shedding in the event of underfrequency, monitoring of power factor, islanding, phase angle...

Customer Benefits

Different types of users see application-specific and role-based overviews of the power grid, all based on the same family of multipurpose devices. Applications include simple PQ indicators (total harmonic distortion, asymmetry, voltage events) and power factor monitoring. ewz uses these indicators to control the reactive power flow in realtime in order to optimize costs.

Type/quantity of measurement devices

approx. 30 UMG devices (mainly UMG 605, and UMG 511+ UMG 503 combinations), an expansion to approx. 120 devices is planned.

Software

NQS is a web application that runs on a Windows server. It is fully integrated into the IT environment and compatible with LDAP, ORACLE, VMWare, Internet Explorer (from version 6 to 9). NQS is based on NetCeler's IVPower product, which has been continuously improved over the past eight years.
