CUSTOMER REQUIREMENT
Fresenius Kabi is a global healthcare company with more than 42,000 employees. Its portfolio includes biopharmaceutical products, medical technology, clinical nutrition, generic medicines and infusion therapies. In preparation for energy eff iciency campaigns, consumption data from various locations worldwide needed to be available live and online. Communication was to take place via OPC UA over the company‘s own network, as this ensured particularly secure transmission.
SOLUTION
As the first step towards group-wide energy monitoring, current and historical data from the individual production sites had to be retrievable at all times at the headquarters in Bad Homburg. For this purpose, UMG 801 measuring devices from Janitza were used. In 2021, Fresenius Kabi began with 65 meters installed in Brazil, the USA, China, India and several European sites. This approach built on an existing group-wide OPC UA network, which already retrieved machine data such as temperatures, pressure, production counts, etc., every second and stored them on servers in Bad Homburg. The Janitza devices impressed with their integrated OPC UA interface. Separate gateways would have required considerable programming eff ort and introduced a potential source of errors. Using the power grid monitoring soft - ware GridVis®, the devices could be easily integrated into the network. At each site, they only needed to be installed and connected to the OPC UA network. Configuration could then be carried out from any location — in this case, by two employees in the Dominican Republic. Today, with an additional 71 Janitza measuring devices installed, all plants are connected so that their respective main energy consumption is included in the reporting. All data is available live via the servers in Bad Homburg. Thanks to the open interfaces, the measuring devices can communicate both with GridVis® and with other soft ware applications.
CUSTOMER BENEFIT
The infrastructure also enables higher-resolution measurements, meaning that the largest consumers at a site can be recorded separately. A pilot project for this is already underway. The UMG 801 off ers another advantage here: it can be expanded to up to 92 current measurement channels using extension modules. Measuring individual large consumers allows Fresenius Kabi to move from pure reporting to targeted eff iciency campaigns. For example, refrigeration systems across all locations can be compared. The responsible experts then meet for round table discussions. With precise, comparable data, they can exchange ideas more eff ectively and develop concrete solutions.
